Y's Nivas, Chittarikkal, India
TOF 99-07
Y's Nivas is a home for disabled and destitute old people which provides free shelter, food, clothing and medical aid irrespective of religion or caste. Many of the inmates have been rejected by their family as they have grown old and infirm. They are given training in gardening and bee keeping, toy and candle making, the preperation of Ayurveda medicines and are encouraged to use these and other skills to regain a sense of self worth.

Karunakaran
has no family and was a nomad, wandering all over India until the age of 62.
Often he was forced to beg for a living. He was found in the street half dead
and brought to Y’s Nivas. Now, to use his own words, he has been "reborn
again as a happy person". Always cheerful, he is seen here busy at his
hobby of weaving baskets.
