Training in Tailoring
Thiruvalla, India

TOF 99-08

The Y’s Men and YMCA of Thiruvalla cooperate in tailoring classes and goat raising projects which were begun in 1991 with assistance from TOF. These projects have so far benefited over 1,000 families. Now the YMCA is building a well and homes for 11 poor families presently living in sub-human conditions on waste land near the public stadium. Polluted flooding and the dumping of poultry farm waste are creating a dangerous health situation and many people have al-ready contracted skin and lung diseases.

The old........

The plot which is being developed is situated in the midst of a very disadvantaged population and it is planned to integrate a further 50 families in a comprehensive development project.

..........and the new.

The next stage is to provide training in tailoring for the unemployed mothers and young women of the families and a readymade garment industry will be established as an industrial cooperative. Experience has shown that tailoring provides good possibilities of employment, both full-time and part-time.
