What is the International Youth Representative?

The International Youth Representative (IYR) position is an exciting opportunity to become the voice of the youth of Y’s Men International. The IYR best represents the youth of YMI by keeping in constant communication with senior and youth leaders and finding creative and applicable solutions to the challenges faced by the youth.

As the IYR, one of the most important aspects of the position is representing the youth at the International Council Meetings (ICM). At these meetings, the IYR has a voice but has no voting rights.

Qualities of the IYR

Have a strong command of the English language

As of Ocotber 2023, Y’s Men International is in 76 counties and territories worldwide; however, the primary language of communication used by the organisation is English. The IYR must be a strong communicator in English (both oral and written).

Be a good communicator

To tie in with the first IYR quality, it is very important that the IYR remains in constant communication (email, messaging, video calls, in-person visits, etc) with senior leaders of the YMI movement, the IYCom members and the general youth.

Have a strong passion for youth and youth activities

As a youth representative, the IYR must have genuine interest and passion for youth empowerment, growth, and further leadership and development and development of youth.

Have time to do the job and do it well!

The position of IYR can be very demanding between online and in-person meetings, occasional presentations and travel, so it is important that the successful candidate has the time and fortitude to be able to carry out their duties.

Must be between the ages 18-28 years

Being an ambassador for the youth, the IYR can best serve the youth by not only speaking for them but truly understanding what the types of situations they are going through at a particular stage in life.

Job Description

  1. The IYR’s term of office is two years, from 1 July 2024 – 30 June 2026.
  2. The IYR attend the International Council Meetings with a voice but no vote.
  3. The IYR chairs the International Youth Committee (IYCom) and is responsible for support elements of “Strategy 2032” related to Youth Involvement during his/her term.
  4. The IYR is in constant communication with the IYCom members (AYRs, ISD YIA, YR Mentor, YPA and ISG) and actively promotes their participation achieve committee objectives.
  5. The IYR coordinates with the Youth Programme Assistant, and vice versa, on youth matters to be promoted and/or implemented at International, Area and Regional levels.
  6. The IYR prepares reports for Mid-Year Meetings and International Council Meetings. These reports highlight completed and ongoing youth activities.
  7. The IYR informs the IYCom members and other youth leaders about decisions made by the ICM through Youth World, YMI World, emails, Youth Convocations, Area/Regional meetings and Area/Regional bulletins.
  8. The Youth Representative Mentor (YRM) is a source of guidance to the IYR. The IYR keeps in contact with the YRM by email, phone and/or personal contact whenever possible.
  9. The IYR helps to prepare the programme for the International Youth Convocation and assists with the election of his/her successor.
  10. The IYR passes on all necessary information to their successor.

Please note: While not required, it is advised that the IYR applicant should have previous experience as a STEP/YEEP/iGo participant, or have attended at least one International Youth Convocation (IYC).

Procedures & Rules

  1. The IYR 2024-2026 is to be elected by Area Youth Representatives (AYRs) and Regional Youth Representatives (RYRs) through an online election.
  2. All AYRs and RYRs will receive the voting link from Y’s Men International. The voter’s choice in the election will be confidential.
  3. The online election is monitored by the International Secretary General.
  4. The IYR cannot be elected from the same Area two consecutive times. This means that applications are not open to candidates from India Area.

  • 24 November 2023
    • Names of candidates will be announced
  • 4 December 2023
    • All eligible voters will receive the voting link by email
    • Voting begins
  • 3 January 2024 at 11:59 PM (Geneva time – CET)
    • Voting closes
  • 8 January 2024
    • Successful candidate is announced
