Day 2 of the 75th International Convention of Y’s Men International brought a packed programme of fellowship, learning, reflection and celebration to Penang.
For some delegates, the day began with an early-morning Tai Chi session before the Blue Music Choir opened the Ballroom programme in song. International Secretary General Jose Varghese then presented his report, placing particular emphasis on storytelling and the importance of sharing the impact of YMI with others.
The energy level quickly rose with the arrival of delegates from the International Youth Convocation (IYC). Following an enthusiastic entrance into the Ballroom, the young delegates led an equally energetic orientation for the Festival Games. What followed was a lively session of games enjoyed in a spirit of fun, fellowship and, inevitably, some friendly competition.
The mood became more reflective with a special Peace Concert presented by delegates from Korea. Through singing, dancing and martial arts, the performance carried particular poignancy as the Convention marked the 25th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks.
The afternoon programme looked towards the future of the movement. Kathleen Elsig, Director of YMCA Partnerships, presented A Shared Future: The YMI–YMCA Partnership for Vision 2030, while delegates also heard key updates on YMI International Programmes and stories demonstrating YMI’s impact around the world. Long-standing service was celebrated with the recognition of clubs aged 100 years and more, while an IBC Signing Ceremony marked another important moment in the programme.
Another grand Convention dinner brought everyone together in the evening. International President Rev. Dr Johan Vilhelm Eltvik addressed delegates, while those celebrating birthdays during the Convention received some special recognition and, of course, a cake!
The evening’s keynote address came from Dr Manoj Kurian, Director of the World Council of Churches and President of the Y Service Club of Geneva, who delivered a powerful presentation on loneliness and the dangers of increasing social isolation.
Day 2 finished on a suitably colourful note, as delegates themselves took to the stage for lively cultural performances representing Africa, Europe, India and Korea.
From Tai Chi at the beginning of the day to music and cultural celebration at its conclusion, Day 2 captured much of what an International Convention is about: connection, friendship, shared purpose and the diversity of the international YMI community.
